Faith & Gender Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be a man in the
body of Christ. I have also been listening to women's stories of what
it looks like to be a woman in the body of Christ. When I first
started preparing for the faith and gender classes and conference
that are coming up, I was coming at it from a mostly intellectual
perspective. Questions about women in ministry or gender roles in
relationships are interesting, but the more I've been talking with
others, the more I've realized this isn't just about interesting
questions for contemplation. This is about a necessary conversation
between men and women that rarely happens in an authentic way in the
church. I'm more convinced than ever that this conversation is not
about being "politically correct" or to be current with the times.
This conversation is necessary because it's an issue of justice. Half
of the church has been marginalized, power has been abused, and,
honestly, there's we've made very little space to share our stories of
what it means to be a woman or a man in the church.
So I'm truly excited about the learning we'll be doing and the
conversations we'll be facilitating surrounding these issues. At the
end of September, we'll have a three-week depth class of learning and small
group discussion on these issues. Click here
to RSVP and get more details. Then, at the beginning of October we'll
invite the larger Seattle community to join us in the conversation.
Our speaker for our annual learning conference is Lauren Winner, author of Mudhouse Sabbath and Real Sex: The Naked Truth About Chastity.
She will be speaking on Oct. 10th and 11th on what we can learn from
the Church Mothers and the Trinity in this whole discussion. Register now and help spread the word (here's the facebook event).
