Forming Deep Roots with Quest | July 28 - August 3

Quest community,

We can all see that our society is fast-moving and ever-changing. Transition, mobility, and the need to form new relationships have become the norm. As each of us wonders what life will look like in five or 15 years, probably most of us feel a great deal of uncertainty. Such uncertainty can tempt us to not dig deep roots with a faith community. In this way uncertainty can be quite restrictive, luring us away from the kind of relational presence each of us needs to give and receive in order to be fully human.

Church membership can seem like a scary thing, especially if the phrase itself conjures up an idea of needing to remain with a particular congregation for 40 years. That seems like a daunting commitment when so many factors out of our control will affect where we will be even five years from now. But church membership isn't about 40-year pledges. It's about following Jesus by practicing community and commitment wherever we are now, in this current season of life.

Our iQ (information Quest) class is coming up, August 17, 6:30 p.m. The iQ class is a summary of Quest's background, beliefs, and leadership, and we ask each person to take part in an iQ class before becoming a member of Quest (though attending the class does not force you to become a member). Please consider this an encouragement to be fully present with Quest — participating in all of the responsibilities and benefits that come with membership — during this season of life.

What: iQ class

When: August 17, 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Dinner is provided. Childcare is available upon request. Please RSVP to the church office.

- Paul Glavic, Quest Operations Director

Getting Set for C-Groups | July 14 - July 20

Quest community,

Acts 2:42-47 is so beautiful:

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

We can read it again and again. It never gets old for us. In fact, it was one of the cornerstones of why Quest was planted nine years ago.

And while having a church community of 400+ dispersed over three services makes "community" challenging, it remains one of the significant aspects of who we are. Simply, we "do community" because God has created us for community.

As fall approaches, we're beginning the process of recruiting, praying, and strategizing for our C-Groups. For now, here are two questions for you to consider:

1. Are you interested in serving as a host or co-host by opening up your home?
2. Are you interested in serving as a C-Group leader or co-leader?

No obligations but if you're interested, send an email to tony@seattlequest.org.

Hope to See You at Our Upcoming Picnic | July 6 - July 12

Quest community,

Just wanted to remind you that we have a church picnic coming up: July 18 at Magnolia Playfield, following our 11 a.m. service. Bring a "grillable" — some meats and/or veggies — and a side dish. The Quest staff will bring buns, condiments, drinks, and utensils.

Seating space at the park is limited, so you're encouraged to bring blankets or chairs. You are also welcome to bring your pets!

In addition to our meal, there will be softball (in conjunction with the Sunday softball C-Play group), badminton, frisbee, volleyball, and water balloons.

We need some volunteers to help with this event. If you have a grill we can use, or drive a truck that could transport the grills and/or sports equipment from Quest to the park, we would really appreciate you sharing your stuff with us for the afternoon.

There is also a need for 8-10 people to help with the process of set-up and tear-down. While you're free to volunteer for both, even serving with one side of the process would be a huge help! We also need a couple people to help out with grilling and food prep.

If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, please contact our new Operations Director, Paul Glavic, via email (paul@seattlequest.org).

If you haven't been to Magnolia Playfield before, the path from Quest is relatively simple: head west on W Dravus St. and turn left to head south on 32nd Ave W. You'll see a tall Albertson's sign on the left side of the road; Magnolia Playfield is to the right, across from Albertson's. Street parking should be available on the roads surrounding the park.

ReNew VBS | June 15 - June 22

Quest,

Think back to your childhood and pull out any memories of the classic church VBS that you have. Remember your personal experiences, or the thoughts you associated with the banners you drove by in church yards, or the cheesy prizes brought home for perfect attendance and “good evangelism skills” (aka bringing a friend). I now challenge you to set these memories and stereotypes aside and picture for a moment this scene:

Children walk into a room that has been transformed into another world. They are greeted by leaders who are excited to forge new friendships over the course of a week — to laugh and learn together, to ask questions and have conversations about new ideas and ways of viewing God's world. This "other world" has a constant stream of creativity demonstrated through music, silly skits, and messy-gluey-glittery crafts (that yes, might end up in a box at the end of summer, but may magically appear as someone prepares to leave for college). Unlimited streams of conversation, dialogue, story-telling and Bible training intermingle in the air and crowd every space with beautiful, melodic, sweet noise. Shouts and tears, laughter and quiet are all embraced in some dizzying, exhausting, rejuvenating, and exhilarating way. Everyone, yet no one, is ready for this crazy week to end as some learn much and some learn less, but all have been marked by an unforgettable time at VBS, certain that echoes of the week will reverberate at random moments — in songs, stories, and friendships — reminding us of the importance of this summer experience.

The old has gone and the new has come. No matter what you thought previously, VBS is a fantastic week to be a part of church life! Please consider entering this world with your community this summer! Maybe it’s through donations you make to camp, or being a shepherd to a group of second-graders. Maybe it’s helping/participating in the family service day. Or maybe you want to be a part of kids lives all summer long! Wherever you might fit in the picture, the children of our church are seeking new leaders and friends to come alongside us.

Seeking to inspire love for, and service to, children,

Katey Hage

Children's Ministry Director

Summer Sunday Schedule and C-Play | June 10th - June 17th

Quest community,

Despite doubts in many people's minds, summer will come to Seattle and Quest will be ready!

There are two main changes we want to share with you:

SUNDAY SCHEDULE

Quest will again be at two services — 9.15 a.m. and 11 a.m. — from July 4 to September 5. Our 5 p.m. service will have its last service before the break on Sunday, June 27, and will resume on Sunday, September 12.

Because the 5 p.m. community and ministry are important, there will be fellowship/potluck gatherings on Sundays, June 27, July 25, and a date to be determined in August. As you might assume, the gatherings will take place at 5 p.m.

C-PLAY

More information will be released soon, but, over the months of July and August, there will be several opportunities for people to gather to play and fellowship together. Options include Sunday softball, Quest Outdoors, biking, basketball, and more.

Life Together Retreat | June 3rd - June 10th

Greetings Quest!

It's hard to believe that we are almost half way through 2010 already.

With the anticipation of sunnier skies and warmer temps, what better way to welcome in the summer than spending it with your fellow Quester’s up in the beautiful Cascade mountains!

So, to all of my post-college/pre-family friends, there's still time to register for Quest's annual Life Together Retreat on June 11-13th at Camp Cascades.

Our theme this year is Imago Dei –knowing our identity as made uniquely in the image of God. Through worship, discussions, reflections, fun and fellowship, we hope to provide a truly life giving space for all those who attend.

If you haven't already, we invite and encourage you to register online and consider joining us for what is sure to be a memorable time. The cost is $110 and includes all meals and accommodations. For information on scholarships, please email ray@seattlequest.org

I am excited about all the ways God is present within our Quest community. Stay encouraged and may God's love continue to fill you as you seek to love and serve those around you.

Blessings,

Pastor Gail

Sacred Intimacy | May 26th - June 2nd

Dear Quest,

This past year we’ve been implementing a new ministry at Quest called: LifeCourse.  LifeCourse is a set of classes through out the year that address particular seasons and stages of life.  Every year under this ministry umbrella we will be hosting classes for pre-marital couples, married couples and parents.  With that said, it’s really exciting to have our first class for married couples in June called: Sacred Intimacy.

We are especially thrilled to offer this class because it’ll be facilitated and led by Tina Schermer Sellers, professor and marriage & family therapist at Seattle Pacific University.  Professor Sellers will lead us in reflecting and understanding what Godly intimacy is in a marriage, as well as give practical tools to establish deeper connection with our spouse.  Her studies on ancient Christian-Judeo traditions of worship will give us insight into how intimacy with our spouse reflects our love for God and each other.

The thing is we are all on the path to knowing and being known.  It is not something that we arrive at but the process of understanding our spouse’s needs, as well as our own needs helps provide a platform for moving towards one another instead of away or against.  This will be a setting to cultivate those conversations.  The class will be held on June 26th from 4-8 pm.  The registration fee is $15 per couple and childcare is available.  This is a wonderful learning opportunity and we hope that you can join us!  Please register online or by emailing me at deanza@seattlequest.org.

Many Blessings to you,

Pastor DeAnza
