Global Presence announces a FOCUS GROUP STUDY of a new book by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert (foreward by John Perkins) called When Helping Hurts – How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor and Yourself. From the back jacket:
Churches and individual Christians typically have faulty assumptions about the causes of poverty, resulting in the use of strategies that do considerable harm to poor people and themselves. When Helping Hurts provides foundational concepts, clearly articulated general principles and relevant applications. The result is an effective and holistic ministry to the poor, not a truncated gospel.
We'll be meeting for four Monday evenings at 7pm, 2/22, 3/1, 3/15, and 3/22. As one reviewer of the book notes: “… the authors shift the conversation away from the needs of the poor to a call to build on what the poor already have – willing hearts and minds that just need an opportunity.”
The focus group will be led by both Pastor Ray and Keith Tungseth, a senior partner at Breakthrough Partners, a non-profit that seeks to identify and build indigenous leaders in developing areas around the world.
