artSPEAK: Justice & Compassion Arts Fair / Convergence: Global Presence | May 13 - 18, 2009

artspeak

Dear Family,

Over the years and years of human existence art has been a powerful resource to educate, to build awareness, to evoke an emotional response and to bring enjoyment to its audience.  Art speaks in a way that crosses all barriers from socio-economics to race to gender to engage us in the human experience of beauty, pain, suffering, celebration, joy and fear (to name a few).  This year we, at Quest, have a desire to engage that more deeply.  We know that we are blessed to be in a community that is overflowing with so much talent and gifts.  We want to engage people in their interest and talents by not only acknowledging it, but also challenging us to think how can we use our gifts of art & craft as a way to speak into issues of justice and compassion?  How can we tell story through our mediums in a way that keeps intact each experience with integrity?  Perhaps we can do that by partnering our work with other organizations and people or maybe what we produce in our work will reflect justice and compassion directly...  There are many avenues to explore and we will do that together at Quest through an art fair entitled artSPEAK

On May 28th, we will be holding workshops (dance, theatre, crafts, food & hospitality, photography, painting, graphic design and creative writing).  These workshops will be facilitated by experienced Questers and will give the community an opportunity to explore these questions and our art together.  We do need you to RSVP for this event and specify what workshop you'd like to attend.

Then on May 29th, we will be culminating the art fair with a church-wide open mic and art gallery featuring the talents of those at Quest.  The open mic is not a traditional open mic in the sense that you can come and just share we need you to sign up early.  The art gallery has limited space so we need you to submit your pieces to us early on so that we can reserve a space for you.  We will also be using this event to continue building awareness around the issues of homelessness.  There is a cover charge of $5 and proceeds will be going to a program called Operation Nightwatch.  Operation Nightwatch has been a pillar in our community in extending care, compassion and advocacy to the homeless in Seattle.  We are excited to support their great work.

If you are interested in participating in this year's artSPEAK please be sure to RSVP to myself at deanza@seattlequest.org.  It is going to be an exciting event and we don't want you to miss it so register early!!  AND come ponder together: How will your art speak?

Join us this Saturday from 9 am - 1pm for Convergence, a morning of learning in community about what God is doing in our world, and how you can be involved.  We'll be addressing why the church and individuals are still called to mission, how to formulate a theology or philosophy of global engagement for your family and church or civic group, and hosting four breakout sessions with special guests.

Kedmon Mapana shares about Global Presence from an East African perspective, Barb Lundquist and Wendy Lindell are sharing how to start a global non-profit if that's your calling, Andy Larsen will be sharing about his experiences in Muslim-Christian dialogue, and a panel of local folks involved globally will be sharing how they became involved, and how you can connect locally for global impact.  See you Saturday, and register now to save a spot: http://seattlequest.org/converge.
