child dedication

“He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.” (Matthew 18:2-5)

Hello Quest,

This Sunday is a special day.  We will join with families who will bring their children before God and community to commit themselves to nurturing their children’s faith; as well as witness the joyful baptism of several children and adults during our three services.

Dedicating or baptizing our children is not just a religious rite of passage or a rule that we must follow to be good Christians.  It is a sign of a parent’s faith and trust in God to see the greatness in our children and their ability to be used by Him.  It is our response of worship to God, because He extends grace to us and our children, we entrust our them into His care, knowing their salvation is in His hands.  It is also a very serious and reverent commitment to teach our children the ways of God (Deut. 6:4-9) so they will know, love and serve Him.  We dedicate or baptize them in community to have both accountability and support from people with whom we share the joys and burdens of raising our kids.  As a new parent of two young boys I wrestle everyday with the challenges of parenting; and know what it feels like to be surrounded by others who can support, encourage, and help me raise my children well.

You know, it doesn’t matter if you are a parent or not, each person in our community has a responsibility to the children of our church.  Ask a child who they look up to and oftentimes it will be someone you wouldn’t expect- a teacher, neighbor, single aunt or uncle, neighbor down the street, a Sunday school teacher at church, or maybe someone in the media- what’s the point?  The sphere of influence in a child’s life is wide and there are opportunities for just about everyone to serve the kids of our church!  If you would like to share in the joy and privilege of this ministry, we invite you to serve with us in the Children’s Ministry!  There is always need for someone to hold babies, build block towers with toddlers, teach bibles stories to preschoolers or dialogue with grade-schoolers about how everyday life and faith are beautifully intertwined.  Ask any one of our amazing volunteers currently serving: you will discover a refreshed faith and new joy when you serve! I just ask that you let God’s word and the Holy Spirit give you that nudge to accept the call to serve kids. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me: katey@seattlequest.org.
