Faith & Economics Depth Class
All of us have been impacted in some way by the recent ongoing
economic "meltdown" and, sadly, many of you have been hit especially
hard. Our sense of security is shaken. How does our faith intersect
with all of this? I haven't come to any sweeping conclusions, but I've
spent some time these past couple of months wrestling with the meaning
of Christian stewardship and how our stewardship informs our economic
life decisions. Writing from prison toward the end of his life, the apostle Paul's
words to the Christians in Philippi are particularly challenging for me
(4:11-12): "... for I have learned to be content whatever the
circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is
to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and
every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty
or want." Wow. Paul had a deep trust in God and His provision for every
need, no matter what the circumstances. That's tough. And it raises the
question: What does it mean to be a good steward in times of need and
abundance? We will explore this and related topics during the Faith & Economics Depth Class, a one-day event scheduled for this coming Saturday, February 7th, from 9 am until 2 pm, in the church sanctuary.
We will be talking about all the stuff you've been hearing about in
the news: budgeting, credit, borrowing and debt, investing, and housing
--all from a Christian perspective and in the context of stewardship.
